    Questions & Answers

What is the ABBA song, Fernando, talking about?
I was just listening to the song, and I realized that it was about a war - but which war?? All I know is that the song mentioned the Rio Grande, and something about freedom and that it was written in the 70s...can anyone help me, based on that?

Somewhere in the lyrics there is: "Can you hear the drums Fernando? Do you still recall the fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande? I can see it in your eyes how proud you were to fight for freedom in this land. (...) though we never thought that we could lose there’s no regret " Seems that an old woman is speaking to an old man (Fernando) ('now that we are old and grey') about a war they fought when they were quite young... The song appears to be set in the context of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, with Fernando taking the part of one of the rebels crossing the Rio Grande to fight the Federal troops. The woman seems to be asking the man to try and remember with her how proud they were. (I always got the impression that perhaps they weren't totally victorious--'though we never thought that we could lose, there's no regret'...)
