Sainsbury's Bank plc is a bank operating in the United Kingdom and is a 50/50 joint venture between J Sainsbury plc and the Bank of Scotland (a subsidiary of HBOS plc). It is a company incorporated in England, at 33 Holborn, London.
Sainsbury's was the first major UK supermarket group to establish a banking arm, with operations beginning on February 19, 1997. The company has access to over 11 million customers who visit Sainsbury's every week and offers credit cards, savings, insurance, mortgages and loans.
Other UK supermarkets have entered the financial services market, e.g. Tesco Financial Services offering similar products. Both companies link many products to their reward schemes, for example bonus points for purchasing a new product.
While the Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd. division has struggled since the late 1990s, Sainsbury's Bank has been a largely successful venture. The division generated its first profit in 1999.
Ironically however as the supermarket division has seen its fortunes improve under new CEO Justin King, Sainsbury's Bank has begun to struggle. In late 2004 J Sainsbury plc announced the bank was suffering "in an increasingly competitive market". This has continued towards the end of 2005, King announced Sainsbury's Bank would make a loss in the first two quarters of 2005 due to "bad and doubtful debt." In March 2006 the bank's Chief Executive Tim Pile agreed to step down due to increasing losses as a result of bad debt. For the year ending 25 March 2006 Sainsbury's bank reported increased revenue of £330 million (from £288 million in 2005) but still posted a loss of £10 million (from £17 million in 2005). "

Abbey's registered office is in London and its main corporate centre is in Milton Keynes. Its savings and banking administration departments are both in Bradford, with a mortgage centre in Thornaby-on-Tees (which is rumoured to be under threat of closure ). Abbey currently has Banking Contact Centres in Sheffield and Glasgow. Business Banking operations, both administrative and telephony, are also based in Glasgow, having been moved from Taunton and Newport early in 2005.
Abbey previously operated contact centres in Derby, Warrington and Gateshead. The Derby and Warrington centres were closed as part of a cost cutting execise. Those jobs moved to Bangalore and Pune, India. Following the takeover by Banco Santander, the Gateshead operations also closed in March 2005. However, operations then returned to the UK at a later date
* Abbey was the first of the UK building societies to demutualise, which it did in July 1989, floating at £1.30 per share on the London Stock Exchange. As a result, Abbey National plc had an unusually large number of small shareholders; approximately 1.8 million initially.
* Abbey National took over the Bradford-based National & Provincial Building Society in 1995.
* Abbey National shares peaked at more than £14 in 2000, before the stock market began a long decline.
* Abbey National changed its trademark to Abbey in 2003, (although it remained registered as Abbey National plc. The name could not be legally changed as the name Abbey plc was already taken by an Irish property development company, also listed on the London Stock Exchange.
* Abbey became part of Grupo Santander on 12 November 2004.

Is there a main stream British bank that does free Business banking?
Are there any requirements, i.e. amount of money paid in each month, etc.
I opened a business account with the Abbey, but I can only pay money in via a cash machine which my local branch doesn`t have. Apparently the girls in there are unable to handle business accounts. crazy or what?
I've heard this about the Abbey. Most, if not all banks will give you free banking for the first twelve months. I use Barclays for my business banking and have found them to be very good.
