    AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED (by: Russ)
Nikon’s AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED lens is a little gem that is available in Canada for about $130. Think about it: Nikon glass, of any kind, for less than $200. That’s less than you pay for some filters. ...

How to use the AF-assist beam properly on a digital slr camera?
I own a canon 350D, and at the last gig i photographed at i used the flash and my camera kept using the AF-assist beam when i pushed the shutter halfway down, but when i pushed the shutter down fully it was still using the AF-assist beam and didnt take the picture. How can i get it to actually take the photo? As i dont want to be in this situation next time i photograph at a gig.

The camera will not take a photo if the light is too low to focus properly when you are using AF. AF will get you close, then turn it off and go manual. It's super important to understand DoF (Depth of Field), so that you can max out the manual focus. The flash has a short-short range, and if the subject's too far, the AF will not let you get the shot.

How does the AF function of a Nikkor ED AF- I 300mm lens actually work, internally.?
I am on a mission to understand exactly how the AF function works, between the camera and the lens. What is the process, or processes? Thanks

Internal focus functions more or less the same way, no matter who the lens manufacturer is. A lens is made up of multiple glass elements, split into multiple groups. With an internally-focusing lens, the front and rear groups are fixed in place, and there are one or more floating elements inside the lens that are able to move forward or backward to adjust the focus. A good demonstration and summary of what internal focus looks like is here: http://www.canon.com/bctv/faq/if.html Autofocus gets a bit more complicated. With most SLRs (DSLRs included), autofocus systems use what's called a phase detection system. Essentially, it's based on a separator lens that splits the image, and the autofocus system determines whether or not the subject is in focus based on whether the spacing is correct in the double image. Nikon also has their own proprietary autofocus systems, including the Multi-CAM2000 Autofocus Module. You can read more about both at: http://www.nikon.co.jp/main/eng/portfolio/about/technology/nikon_technology/caf/index.htm http://nikonimaging.com/global/technology/scene/08/index.htm

How easy is it to get promoted in the AF?
I am planning on enetring the AF as an officer with my BSN. I will be going to Officer training but specialized for healthcare professionals. I understand i would enter as a 2nd LT. How easy or better yet, how fast could I expect to get promoted. Please include rank and number of years that I would be looking at before I saw the promotion. What does it mean when you say promotions happen automatically??? How does that work?

as my father LT. Col said to get promoted to 1st lt. you have to maintain a pulse to captain - breath to a major breath with style. hope it helps
