Questions & Answers
when do I use Affect vs Effect in a sentence? What's the rule to remember here?
In general, "affect" is a verb; "effect" is a noun. "Affect" is most commonly used to mean "influence."
Affect vs effect...occassionally I get confused...can someone help? Here's my knowledge:
Cause and Effect.
Affect is your mood or a shown emotion.
Can someone give me general guidelines on when to use them contextually?
"Television, radio, and film have affected many lives since the time they were introduced. "
is affected correct or should it be effect?
Also on a side note...i.e. vs. e.g....can I get them reexplained to me, with one you give specifiec examples, and with the other you describe, right? Which is which?
I like to consider myself an educated person and I don't want to appear stupid in writing. I want to know why I chose my words and be able to defend why they are right. Thank you for the help!
Very generally speaking, "affect" is a verb, and "effect" is a noun. There are exceptions to this, but for the common uses of both words, this rule works well.
i.e. means "that is", and is used when you are clarifying something you just said.
I decided to join all my friends, i.e., the geeks. (This explains that by "my friends" you're specifically referring to the geeks. It can generally be used to replace the phrase "in other words", which makes it easy to associate with the "i" in "ie".)
e.g. means "for example", and is used to introduce an example of what you mean.
I wanted to invite people I wasn't familiar with, e.g., the jocks, the popular girls, etc. (This introduces examples of what you mean. Can generally be used to replace the phrase "for example". Associate the "e" in "eg" with example to help you remember it.)
Affect vs Effect? I have always had excellent grammar however I am always stuck on the use of (affect vs effect) and (to vs too). Any help?
You affect something only when you change or alter or influence it.
You effect something only when you bring something into being.
Examples:
The medication affected the patient's happiness.
The medication effected a sense of paranoia.
In the latter, the paranoia did not exist before until the medication was taken.
You rarely need to use "effect" as a verb. There are times when it's necessary, but they are not often. As a result, you can usually reserve "affect" for verb use and "effect" for noun use. There are usually better synonyms to use. If I had to use "effect" as a verb, I ask myself this: "Did the subject bring the object into being?" If the answer is no, then I should've used "affect."
