Should we work harder to get respect despite ---or because of--- our effeminate affectations?
Unfortunately, we live in a rather patriarchal society where effeminacy is seen as being negative. This perception is spurred on, in part, by the Abrahamic religions which, in the United States, at least, make up a large percentage of religious affiliations. Women still don't get treated the same as men do, in some respects! Still, what about us effeminate gay guys (or effeminate men in general)? Why do we face so much opposition even in the gay community? Who's out there trying to fight for OUR recognition? Effeminacy is seen as disgusting; terms like "fem" and "queen" and "nelly" are sometimes used as pejoratives! If there wasn't such a stigma against all things feminine, it would be much easier for us. Have any of you ever faced discrimination for being effeminate? What kinds of things should we do to achieve higher regard?
Nobody said being true to your inner self would be easy.
You're right about how society demeans women. So when they see a man (who has all the rights and privileges that comes with having a penis), act like a lowly woman, it causes them to react with disrespect. It's sad but true.
Just remember this: what people -- even homophobic bigots -- respect most is a person who is true to him/herself.
You could hide your femininity and "butch it up." But that would be denying your true self, if you are truly a naturally feminine man. I think that's chicken sh*t and you probably do too.
I'd say be yourself as proudly as possible. Never apologize for yourself or act afraid of them. They'll see your self respect. So what if they don't respect you??? Who needs a bigot's respect?

How should I ask my cat to not wear a top hat in public?
My cat has taken on the affectation of wearing a top hat and monocle in public. I'm worried the other cats will think he's stuck up. How can I tell him without hurting his feelings he does not take criticism well; one time I told him his litter box smelled and he didn't talk to me for a week.
Also, he communicates telepathically. The dog questions his sexuallity. I told him it's none of our business.
You can explain to him that the other cats will view him as an "elitist" when he dresses in such attire.
I agree with Cat Lady, who suggested a baseball cap---the Detroit Tigers, of course :)

Many people in the Southern U.S. use double nouns to describe certain objects, such as "straight pin", "hose pipe" and "ink pen". How did this affectation of speech begin?
When the south started getting more diverse in culture people used double nouns to better explain themselves to outsiders.
It may sound stupid, but we were just trying to make it easier on people not familiar with our dialect.
