KBB or Edmunds TMV in buying a used car from private party?
I am trying to buy a used car from a private party. A 2001 Honda accord, EX, with 52K on it. The KBB good is $11195 and edmunds TMV for that is $9026.. around $2K difference. There's a huge difference. What's the recommendation in terms of knowing what's the right price for a used car? Does one follow the KBB or Edmunds TMV? The seller ofcourse is selling it for KBB good. Any suggestions/tips??

Look up pricing on www.edmunds.com - True Market Value. The other major pricing guides are www.kbb.com and www.nadaguides.com. Both of these are good (especially if you are the seller) - but they tend to have pricing that is less realistic - but that allows dealers to advertise/sell with messages like "priced to sell - below Kelley Blue Book prices."

Why do they give way cheaper target prices at carsdirect.com as compared to the tmv pricing at edmun
i was wondering why they give such low prices at carsdirect.com,i mean its way lower than the invoice or the tmv pricing at edmunds.com,is it really possible that a dealership can give you such a price?

My impression is that carsdirect.com has a reasonably good reputation. I used them recently with very good results. There are several reasons why carsdirect might give a lower target price than Edmund's TMV. One is that some dealers may have versions of the car that they badly want to move. Second, sales made over the internet usually go for lower prices (because the customers are more savvy about the competition). I suspect that one of those reasons is in play here. A third less honorable reason is that cardirect.com wants to sell cars and edmunds does not and thus edmunds engages in no trickery, as a dealer might. But again based on my experience I'd give carsdirect the benefit of the doubt. Good luck!

Does Edmund's TMV values includes taxes and title etc?
Is Edmunds TMV is "out the door" price or it does not include tax, title etc. I didnt find info about this on their website. And what is usual dealer documentation fee....

Edmond's, like other buying guides, do not include taxes or fees because these will vary by state & county. Sales tax will be calculated by state & county. Licsense & Title fees vary by state . In Illinois you are also charged tax on the documentation fee . The State also will charge sales tax on any rebates supplied to you by the manufacturer. This is because rebates are money rebated or "refunded" AFTER the sale. You pay taxes on the sales price, and the rebate comes off after taxes. Just like when you buy a computer or appliance or even just like when you use a coupon at the grocery store Legal documentation fees also vary by state. The state of Illinois allows $57.33 per vehicle. This figure is re-established each year & signs supplied by the state are supposed to be posted in the dealership. (I think Wisconsin's doc fee is $96) You should realize that none of the buying guides (Edmonds, Kelley Blue Book, N.A.D.A., etc.) actually sell cars. Nor do they buy cars. They just collect data & publish averages or "values". These are not "prices". These figures are 'guidelines' . You may pay more or less than any "book" says because remember these are published AVERAGES. Hope this clarifies for you.
