How accurate is Edmunds True Cost to Own?
I am looking into purchasing a new car, but would like to have a realistic idea of maintenance costs when considering my options. So, how accurate is Edmunds True Cost to Own (TCO)?

In my experience the Edmunds guide is pretty accurate but really should be used as a guide. It i really good to use for comparison purposes, I don't think I would hold them or budget something based on the numbers being exact but if you are comparing cars they are very accurate. There are other sources you can use such as intellichoice.com or cars.com.
Do you ask for lower than kbb or edmunds at dealerships?
I'm thinking about buying a used car from a dealership. Do you normally pay slightly below kbb or edmunds?
It never hurts to try! You don't know what the dealership owns the vehicle for, how long they've had it, or how badly they want to sell it. In our area (Colorado), I have found that the KBB private party price is a pretty good indicator. Dealerships should be asking above this price (closer to KBB retail), but if you can get the car for just under private party 'good' condition and have it inspected and detailed by the dealership with possibly some warranty included, you've got a good deal.
Don't forget to do other research first. In some cases a particular vehicle can be 'strong' (commands over book) or 'soft' (goes for less) in a certain market. For example, if we had any 2wd SUV's, we would be happy to sell them for kbb trade-in! So make sure to check other books like edmunds and nada, and average out listings in the local paper.
