Sam and Max are a great series of adventure games. Other worthy mentions are the Dreamfall series, Full Throttle, The Runaway series, and obviously the Monkey Island series. (And older Leisure Suit Larry games.)
If you want a lot of homebrew free adventure games that gamers have made, or even want to make your own, you can go to http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/
Just click the games link on the left, many many adventure games of varying quality, and you can't beat free. =) You can download the games without the Adventure Game Studio (Which is also free) as all the games when compiled are completely standalone. Hope you enjoy.

i was digging thru some old games & remembered how much i loved games like "grim fandango", "starship titanic", "titanic", "normality", & "full throttle"... 1st person adventures where u pick dialogue, collect things, & solve puzzles. can anyone recommend some newer ones?
also is there anything like "silent steel" out lately? u pick dialogue in that too, but it was more like an interactive film, b/c it featured live actors
