How much do UPS or FEDEX drivers make? Is it a good career to support a family? @qaa_question
When I left UPS in 2004, starting hourly pay was circa $15, meaning that for a person without advanced education, it's a nice rate of pay. Union members get slightly better wages and more authorized overtime, but some of the drivers I knew who were full time drivers (I was relief) earned $50K/year with overtime and holiday pay, etc.
To become a driver at UPS, you have to work your way up in the organization. So, you spend a few years loading/unloading boxes and then put your name on a list and when you've been there long enough they give you a spot. It's hard work, long hours, and you may miss out on some family activities working from 8AM to 9PM, but there is a definite need for that type of worker. If you're earning more than driver starting pay when you become a driver, you get to keep your wage as a driver even if it's higher.
What is the Timetable for professional flight careers? I'm about to enter a 4 year long flight program. I'm wondering what the general timetable is for being able to apply to big airlines(mainly cargo) such as FedEx/UPS. I'll graduate with B.S. degree and about 190 flight hours, around 40 of those multiengine. I know that I'll be instructing for a while, but after that I don't have ideas as to where I'll be able to go. Any and all answers welcome :)
to get into a major like that you are going to need turbine time. check out www.airlinepilotcentral.com and www.jetcareers.com for better info about it
