Questions & Answers
IRS forms? Hi, I just turned 18, and my place of work is asking me to fill out IRS forms. What do my employers need these forms for? How would this affect my income? Or say how much would it affect my income? Is there a step-by-step process that I can do to ensure everything is filed correctly?
They're asking you to fill out a Form W-4. That form is used to advise your employer of your SSN and tell them how much tax to withhold from your pay. Your state may have a similar form or may use the information from the Form W-4 for state taxes. If you fail to give your employer your SSN, you probably won't be paid. If you refuse to file the Form W-4 but do give them your SSN, they are required by law to withhold tax at the highest rate, i.e. Single and 0.
They will also have you complete a USCIS Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. That provides proof of your legal status to work in the US. (What's all the noise about "immigration reform?" We already have the laws, we just need to enforce them!) If you don't fill out the Form I-9 and provide proof of entitlement to work -- usually a driver's license and SS card -- you won't be allowed to work at all.
How much does H&R Block charge for taxes? How long does it take til they give the IRS forms to you? I need the IRS 1040A or whatever (not sure exactly which form it is) to correct the info on my FAFSA and I need to have the IRS sheets faxed by March 1st, and my parents have yet to fill out their taxes.
I was wondering how much H&R Block charges, and how long they take to fill out the forms (there isn't much to my parents' W2 forms by the way, it's pretty straightforward), since there's another guy doing it for around $170 for both parents (I think).
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
The starting number is about 72 for federal and state. Block charges by the schedules or forms that need to be calculated. The best thing to do is go in and ask for an estimate. No obligation.
As far as timing goes....you and Block sit there and do the return and you get a completed copy before you leave the office.
What's the difference between IRS forms(s): 1040, 1040A, & 1040EZ? What's the difference between IRS forms(s): 1040, 1040A, & 1040EZ? And how would I know which one I need? What is the most common of the 3?
The 1040 can be used by everybody.
The 1040EZ can only be used if you have wage income of less than $100,000 and are filing as either single or Married filing jointly with no dependents. Interest income less than $1500 can also be reported, also unemployment.
The 1040A is in the middle. It supports dependents, all filing statuses and income type, but not self-employment income, rental property, capital gains, etc.
