What are the origins the jack in the box toy?
I've had two answers saying that the jack in the box toy originated as a "slave in a box," but personally i do not believe this to be the case for the jack in the box who wear's the head of punch or a clown, devil, or puncinella.
Jack in the box toys do seem to date from the 16th century, and possibly many characters have been used?
Jack, as agreed is a name with much, varied and sometimes ambiguous history, but why did it change from "Punch Box" to Jack in the Box?
And who were the first toy makers to make these toys?
A theory as to the origin of the jack-in-the-box is that it comes from the 13th century English prelate Sir John Schorne who is often pictured holding a boot with a devil in it. It is believed in folklore that he once cast the devil into a boot to protect the village of North Marston in Buckinghamshire. If it's true, it would explain why in French, a jack-in-the-box is called a "diable en boîte" (literally "boxed devil").
