Taken the GMAT Kaplan Prep Classes!?
I am considering taking the GMAT Kaplan Prep classes. Has anyone taken them? Did they help prepare you for the test?? I studied for about two months on my own, took the test, but didn't do as well as I would have wanted.
Hi Krluv2trvl (I love to travel too, btw),
Kaplan is a quality service, the problem is that you're going to get taught in a group setting. I signed up with service similar to Kaplan, Veritas, three years ago and ended up attending only one session. I bought a full course, but realized that GMAT tutoring in a group setting was simply not effective. The problem was the students in the classroom represented a range of abilities. There were smart kids and dumb kids; kids who were talented at verbal, but not math - and vice versa.
I highly recommend that you back out if you can, and spend that $1000+ on an independent tutor. That's what I ended up doing and it helped me break the coveted 700 level on the test. Before I met with my tutor, I studied Manahttan GMAT's books by myself, and used free online material, similar to the site I built at http://www.testsandtutors.com . I found my tutor at craigslist.org. Get a tutor who has scored at least a 780 (mine scored an 800, if you can believe it. Not many people out there that have scored that high on the GMAT). Many of these tutors already worked for companies like Kaplan and Veritas, but they're not charging a marked up fee that they would if you were hiring them from a prep firm. And of course, one-on-one tutoring session can help you focus on the areas that are weak much better than group tutoring. Oh, and if you have the money to spend, you might try Kaplan's one-on-one tutoring.
And in terms of self study material, I recommend the Manhattan GMAT series. It's a must-have because they go into way better detail on the mechanics of problem-solving than any other brand. Forget about Kaplan, Princeton Review, Arco or any other GMAT book brand. In my opinion, their books fail to categorize questions as smartly as Manhattan GMAT's . The mediocre brands I just listed typically publish three types of books: verbal review, quant review, and verbal plus quant together. Manhattan GMAT actually produces books on specific portions of the test: books entirely written on critical reading, sentence correction, geometry, number properties, etc. For every minute section you'll need to know on the GMAT, Manhattan GMAT has produced a book. This is why they set the standard.
Are there any good alternatives to Kaplan or Princeton Review GMAT Prep classes?
I want to get a good score on the GMAT, but the prep classes are around $1,000. This is incredibly high, are there any less expensive alternatives that will still help me improve my score. I have the books, but was looking more for an instructor type setting.

Which is better for GMAT prep, Kaplan or Princeton review coaching classes?
Hi there,
Am planning to give GMAT this year around october, but am not able to decide which coaching classes to join.
I have mixed reviews about both.
Am unsure as to how good are the Pune branch of both the coaching centers.
I have tried studying on my own, i am not motivated enough.
So could you please suggest me which one to pick also could tell me what all books to reffer.

I would say Manhattan GMAT, because it's a small company that focuses only on the GMAT, the instructors have all taken the GMAT and scored a 750 or higher, they focus on teaching you the material (instead of just how to beat the test), and their average student score is around 710.
