    Questions & Answers

Where are some places to go for a vacation in Minneapolis/Bloomington MN area w/a two year old?
We are planning on going to the MOA (the underwater aquarium), the MN Zoo, outlet malls and the children's science museum. Is there anywhere else that you'd recommend we go to?? Also, we're looking for a really good park in that area. Thanks!

Which should we do in Duluth MN, the zoo or aquarium?
We'll be in Duluth for a day in June and can afford either the zoo or aquarium. Which is better for families? Which is more fun for kids?

I live here in Duluth and would strongly recommend the zoo over the aquarium. The aquarium costs more and it's very boring in my opinion. After about 30 minutes, I felt like there was nothing left to see. Besides the fish and whatnot, there's info on the lake and boats, etc. To me it's a bit more museum-ish than an aquarium. The zoo has much more to see I think. They did lose 2 of their larger attractions there who died within the last year. The lion is expected to be replaced probably this spring, possibly with cubs, I guess it depends on what's available to purchase. They had 2 polar bears, but one passed away several months ago also (I think from liver disease). The polar bear who died was one of the larger attractions there as he loved to play catch with a big red ball that guests could throw to him. He was so fun to watch with all his different toys. The remaining polar bear has become a more playful one now that she's alone, so it's still fun to see. During the summer they have a mini electric train that can give you a little tour. They also have the kids section with several animals you can feed by hand. I will mention that my daughter does enjoy both locations. But for an adult or older child, my vote's the zoo.

What kind of stuff can you do in Minneapolis, MN that is virtually free?
We have been to the como zoo like 3 times, and to Hiawatha Falls. We like outdoor activities ... so

You can visit the Fort Snelling State Park, there is also a wonderful wildlife center (which is free) that has miles of walking trails along the river. There is also downtown Saint Paul along the river with the Cathedral which is architecturally amazing. There is the Science Center for a rainy day, you can drive down to Cannon Falls and either walk or bike the trails. There is Black Dog Wildlife area along the Mississippi River as well. We used to enjoy going to Old Fort Snelling which has old time military displays manned by interpreters. Hope this helps a bit. A really good reference is to look up Things to Do In Minnesota. If you don't mind the drive there is Walnut Grove from Laura Ingalls Fame, the SPAM Museum (don't ask!) and many historic sites that are reasonably inexpensive but worth the time to see.
