Questions & Answers
Why do NADA and KBB post different suggested retail values for a car with the same options and milea I've been researching a 2004 Mustang GT that has 33,311 miles and I selected the same options on both sites and put in the same mileage but the KBB value is $1,130 higher than that of NADA. What gives?
The reason for the difference is how each book bases its determination of value and whick dealers they audit. The book is just a guide as to the value and many other things can affect the acual cash value of a used vehicle. Things like condition, marketability and market conditions. Bottom line, no book has ever purchased a car. If you want to know what its really worth go to the dealers in your local area and find out what they will pay you for it. Don't trade it, just ask the manager what he would pay you for it.
What is the difference between Kelley Blue Book value and NADA guide value? I have a car that I want to trade in, and it's value is higher in the NADA guide? Should I use this when negotiating with the dealer, or will they not care what NADA says?
I think Kelley is often overpriced and NADA a bit underpriced (except in your case!) so it's best to average the two to get an idea of a car's value. Why not show the dealer the NADA price? You have nothing to lose and it may get you a better price!
Why is there such a difference between Kelly Blue Book and NADA trade in values? I am in the process of trading in my 2004 car on a a new truck and in doing my research am finding the NADA trade-in value is over $2000 higher than the Kelly Blue Book value; for the same car! Of course, the dealer presented me with a deal reflecting the Kelly value, and I of course countered with the NADA value...
So, which value should I deem realistic and why such a huge difference?
Ah, the pleasantries of buying a car...
most dealerships use Kelly blue book...not because they are trying to gouge you, but because it is a more accurate value of what the car is really going for. They also look at what the car is going for at auction... They are not a not for profit organization obviously... NADA tends to be way to high on trade in value they are also comparing that trade in price to paying sticker. They also do not give accurate invoice prices for the new vehicles. Remember if you want to pay the dealership wholesale for their car then that is what you should expect to receive for your trade in. If you want to receive NADA for your car you should pay sticker because your discount is received in your trade in value...
Sincerely,
Honest car sales person
