Questions & Answers
Open university? I am doing an advertising project and have chosen to do it open encouraging people to return to education by going studying a course with the open university. I have some early ideas but want to get lots and lots and lots to help make it a great project. I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas I can go on. I have never done advertising before so am a bit raw. Thanks to any one that answers :)
Hello
There are a number of things you could do. I am in a bit of a rush so I cant write laods but please email at bananajam24@yahoo.co.uk and I iwll help yo umore.
Just to get you going firstly I advice that yoyu look around you!! I know it sounds simple but have a look at ways companies and buisnesses advertise their products. Eg wonderbra---had a seductive model with her boobs out plastered on bill boards and a catchy slogan (which was--'hello boys'!!!). Take pictures or cut out ads form magazines and papers, or print from the net. Get a big piece of A3 card and stick the ads on them and write under it a few notes why you think they are appealing and how they make the products sell!! Contact the companies and ask if you can have sales and profits figures for certain products(most have them this info on their websites).
This will give you a good idea on how others make their buisness work and you can put this in the 'research' part of your project!!
Find the good things to with Education. Figures etc etc which show people enjoying themselves because they are in college/uni or have succeeded coz they have a degree or qualification. Look at Open University themselves-- do you find somethimng missing from their website encouraging people to join?
Umm anyway please email as I really do want to help but I havent got time to write loads on here!!
Hope the first two ideas help!!
Hugs

Are there any student loans available to open university students? I am having a lot of difficulty finding a loan provider that will lend money on student terms to open university students. Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.
There are absolutely none. (had a relative who did one). Open university students are not condsidered full time students- even if they are taking a full year of credits. This is because you are considered to be available for work and not in full time education. So no student loans are available for living expenses.
If you are on a low income, you could receive job seekers allowance and/or housing benefit and council tax benefit. The fact you are doing a O U degree does not effect your entitlement to this as you are not classified as a student.
If you need help with the actual ou tuition fees, the ou will pay for these and any summer school fees if you are on a low income- you just need to apply to the ou for these.
There really are no other ways to fund your course unless you can get a sponsor, such as an employer or a charity possibly. Some university libraries have details of people that fund educational pursuits but these are very limited, usually being bequests left by people in their wills for things such as women's education etc. They are usually only very small sums.
Don't give up on the idea though- just persevere with it and do the courses- either by cutting down on living costs or working as best you can whilst studying. Just have to be good at time management.
What do you think about Open University Degrees? I am finishing mine now and it was really hard work to get it done whilst working full time. I am curious as to what the general perception of Open University Degrees is.
Open University degrees are very highly respected nowadays - a far cry from when it was the 'beardy brigade'. A lot of employers will look very kindly on an OU degree. Congratulations.
