Why do so many people dislike the UK music magazine Q?
I was surprised recently to see a lot of scathing comments about Q magazine. Personally, I've always liked it. Q has covered a wide range of bands and 'genres', and there's always at least a few interesting articles in each issue.
So why the antagonism?
I gave up reading the nME years ago when Pete Docherty was proclaimed ''Britian's coolest man'' while in the midst of a horrendous heroin addiction. Seeing that made me realise that I was getting too old for such nonsense!
I've been reading Q for years and i don't dispute it's a good magazine. I do have a bit of a problem about where it's going though.
I know they are popular and sell shedloads, but why oh why do they have to have Oasis and U2 in every bloody month and have ugly individuals from either (or both even see Q awards edition) on the front every month. If it's not them it's someone dead like Kurt Cobain.
The UK Music scene is really vibrant these days, not that you'd guess it from looking at Q on the shelf in your newsagents. Do you ever see Snow Patrol, Kasabian, Muse, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs etc etc on the cover? Of course not, even thought they sell stuff by the shedload and are pretty mainstream.
Lately the articles have slipped into 500 best this or 100 worst that or yet another Nirvana/Oasis/U2 100 page special, that's when they aren't droning on about how great OK Computer or ...Moring Glory are. It just seems all a bit lazy when you see what's actually in the charts, on TV and on the net.
It's driven me back to the NME. It's not like I'd ever get to read about the likes of the Klaxons, My Chemical Romance, Bloc Party or the Kaisers in Q after all.

It also has an extensive review section, featuring: new releases (music), reissues (music), music compilations, film and live concert reviews as well as radio and television reviews. It uses a star rating system from one to five stars, indeed the rating an album receives in Q is often added to print and television advertising for the album in the UK and Ireland. It also compiles a list of approximately eight albums, which it classes as the best new releases of the last three months.
Much of the magazine is devoted to interviews with popular or new musical artists.
The magazine is well known for compiling lists; it has made lists ranging from "The 100 Greatest Albums" to the "100 Greatest Rock Lists". The most famous of these is the classic "50 bands to see before you die". Every other month Q and its sister magazine Mojo have a special edition magazine — these magazines have been about musical times, genres, or very important musicians.
Often promotional gifts are given away with the magazine, such as cover-mounted CDs or books. The January 2006 issue included a free copy of "The Greatest Rock and Pop Miscellany … Ever!", modelled on Schott's Original Miscellany.
Every issue of Q has a different message on the spine. Readers then work out what the message has to do with the contents of the magazine. This practice — known as the "spine line" — has since become commonplace among British lifestyle magazines, including Q's movie-centric sister magazine Empire, and the football monthly FourFourTwo.
Usual features include The Q50, wherein the magazine lists the top 50 essential tracks of the month; Cash for Questions, in which a famous celeb answers question sent in by readers, who win £25 if their question is printed; Ten Commandments, where a particular singer create their very own ten commandments by which to live; and Rewind, in which the magazine takes us back in time through the history of music through archive issues of Q. On March 4, 2007, "Q" named Elvis Presley the greatest singer of all time.
Q's current editor is Paul Rees, former editor of the UK edition of Kerrang!, another musical Emap publication based on heavier rock/metal music.
In 2006 Q published a readers' survey; the 100 Greatest Songs Ever, won by Oasis' Live Forever.
In the April 2007 issue, Q published an article containing the 100 Greatest Singers, won by Elvis Presley
What is the best music magazine?
I've never bought any before, just kind of flicked through them on the shelves. I'd like to start buying one though- something like Kerrang, NME, Q etc. I like metal, indie, rock and stuff. So what would you recommend? Thanks.
I want one with a lot of good articles and interviews, not full of adverts.
