Does a QAM tuner work with satellite providers?
I'm considering moving out of the city and outside of the range of our local cable tv provider (Cox) and would need to switch to a satellite provider. I have an HDTV that has a QAM tuner built in, so I pickup all the digital channels that Cox passes through unscrambled. My question is this: Does the QAM tuner work with satellite providers just like it does with cable providers? Or am I forced to hook a digital box up to that TV to get the digital/HD channels?

QAM is for Cable Only digital channels NTSC is for Analog via cable, antenna or set top boxes that output on an analog channel (3 and 4 in the US,). Substitute PAL for the UK instead of NTSC. ATSC is for Digital via antenna (substitute DVB for ATSC in the UK)

How do I get local HD through a qam tuner?
I am a little confused about this and I cant seem to find the right answer. I want to buy an HDTV for gaming, not so much the TV, so I dont want to buy additional HD packages from the cable company. I am interested in the free local HD through a qam tuner though. My question is this: Can I recieve this HD content with the basic cable package ( no box, just the coaxial cable coming through the wall), or do I need more?

Most cable companies do NOT scramble the local high def stations so you can use the QAM tuner on your tv to watch these stations. Yes, just connect cable wire from wall to the back of your tv. Here is the important part. You must SCAN for channels the first time you hook up the cable wire. This can take up to 50 minutes. The local hd stations are usually high numbers with a deciaml point. For example, the QAM stations here are 46.1 104.5 106.1 106.3 114.1 There are many, many, blank stations in between your analog cable stations and the few unscrambled channels. Note that the above info assumes that you have expanded basic cable channels 2-80 or so. If you have just basic cable channels 2-13, there MAY be a filter on your line which means you would NOT be able to pick up the local HD stations.

If I have a philips tv with a qam tuner, do I still need a convertor box for Verizon fios tv?
I have a flat panel tv in my kitchen with a built in qam tuner. I don't want to have use a separate digital box from Verizon as it would look rather tacky-Not to mention they charge an extra $4.00 per month for it. Thanks.

-- yes you will need one of their receivers.
