    Questions & Answers

What would be a better place to study, San Francisco or San Diego?
I'm thinking about a going to community college out west, and and trying to decide between San Diego and San Francisco. I realize cost of living in higher in SF, but it isn't much of a factor. Right now I'm slightly leaning towards San Francisco. Pro's and Cons? How's the life for college students out there?

It never fails. Whenever there's a question about San Diego in comparison to the rest of California, San Diegans eagerly bash Los Angeles and San Francisco. Los Angeles has too much crime, smog, and traffic. San Francisco is full of communists and gays. Plus, it is always cold and wet. So goes the San Diego chorus. It is not so much that these criticisms are untrue. Many of them are reasonably valid (or at least, debatable). Rather, it is the sheer venom of the invective that disturbs me. Quite frankly, the attacks are a sure sign of insecurity. San Diego is a haven for reactionaries and right wingers in an essentially blue state, so they have no political clout in either Sacramento or Washington. They get far fewer tourists than Los Angeles and San Francisco. Their universites are not particularly prestigious (UCLA, USC, Stanford, and Berkeley are the top colleges in the state). And so they're reduced to selling sunshine and sand. Two commodities that they certainly have an abundance of. San Diego is a clean and pretty city. But it certainly isn't superior to anyone in terms of innovation or creativity. Here's a more balanced view of San Francisco: Pros: - Beautiful and Atmospheric Hills - High Density, Pedestrianized Streets - Excellent Public Transportation - Interesting Arthitecture and Skyscrapers - World-Class Food - Egalitarian, Laid-back, and Friendly Nightclubs - Excellent Universites (Berkeley, UCSF Medical Center, and Stanford) - Diverse Economy (with Financial Services, Law Firms, Technology Companies, and Tourism all playing an important role) - Redwood Forests, Wine Country, and Ski Resorts Nearby Cons: - Homelessness is Epidemic - Rising Crime Rate - Corrupt Local Government - Overcast/Rainy/Icy Winters - Overzealous Traffic Cops - Lack of Parking - Earthquakes

Is there anywhere in or near San Francisco with a good "bizzare food" menu?
I am in the mood for some culiary excitement. I am looking for a restaurant in or near San Francisco, CA that has an "adventurous" menu... Think REALLY bizarre... (Think almost "Fear Factor" or "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern" style). I am looking for something beyond escargot and sushi (although if you know of a sushi place with an "adventurous" menu that would be fine too) I know we have restaurants that serve those kind of foods out here out here somewhere. I am a SF native and this question has been on my mind for a while, ever since I saw the TV show mentioned above (Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern) . Places with websites/online menus are a plus, but any recommendations would be great! Thanks!

Hmmm.... well, for a gourmet walk on the wild side, you can try the Big Four restaurant in the Huntington Hotel. Very upscale and pricey, but for fun they feature one or two nightly game dishes. Past offerings have included buffalo, ostrich, alligator and antelope. And if you don't like your experiment, you can always fall back on their amazing classic chicken pot pie.

Where's the better place to live, San Francisco or San Diego?
I'm thinking about a going to community college out west, and and trying to decide between San Diego and San Francisco. I realize cost of living in higher in SF, but it isn't much of a factor. Right now I'm slightly leaning towards San Francisco. Pro's and Cons? How's the life for college students out there? No Purple, I'm not gay.

I lived in SF and now in SD. If you can afford SF then go for it, it may well be the best big city in the world. It has culture, some of the best mountains not far away, food, entertainment and the list goes on. Stanford and Berkley are the best in the US. San Diego is a nice place to live permanently because it has better year round weather it is growing. But San Francisco is "The City".
