how much is a safari holiday in south Africa?
from newcastle upon tyne to natal

I am also from Newcastle and travel to SA two or three times a year. As most of the previous answers indicated the best way is to "un-package" your trip.
I personally feel car hire to be a good idea, but my 75 year old father who came the last time, prefered flying between destinations.
There are some fabulous hotels of the highest international standards, but personally I found that I could get a good level of comfort the back packers just as safe and much friendlier. Back packer can be a bit of a misnomer as you can usually get private room with AC if you want it, room service, most have pools
www.hostelworld.com was pretty good.
I think the most imporant thing is to try and organise the first night most hotels and back packers will collect you for free from the Airport.
Have a good time and if you want any specific advise email me kid_chocolate@yahoo.com
When is the best time to go on holiday to South Africa.? We are thinking of the east cape, a lodge perhaps and a game drive (safari). When is the best time to go weather wise and to see the animals?
We were thinking of a fortnight any time between Feb and May.
We've also heard bad things about crime in Capetown. Is it that bad and is it safe in the lodges?
You can read more about crime in Cape Town here:

Any time from Feb to May is good - not too hot, not yet too wintry. You may want to avoid April as this is when there are school holidays in SA so hard to get bookings.

Addo is a great nature reserve in the Eastern Cape - my folks live close by and go there twice a year and love it. It's part of SA National Parks so it's a real wildlife experience at a lot cheaper than the private reserves. On the other hand you won't get 5 star luxury accommodation.

Closer to Cape Town there is Sanbona on the Route 62 - the most authentic of the Cape 'safari' options.
Enjoy South Africa!
who has holiday'd in south africa recently? looking at holidaying in south africa and wondering if anyone has any recomendations or advice on what areas to travel to (which doesnt require too many...or any..... needles). needs to be a little bit family freindly as i will have a 15 month old child. looking at travelling in november-ish
also looking at safari's if anyone has advice on them and or service providers (am into photography so am keen for some good shots)
thanks :)
Definitely come to Cape Town (I'm biased, cos I live here!). November is warm, but not too hot, and also not too busy and crowded as all the kids are still at school. In Cape Town, you have the opportunity to travel to Robben Island, go up the cable car on Table Mountain, travel the wine route and visit wine farms, visit private game farms for the "safari" experience, you will also be able to see whales in the ocean...and lots more.
Here are some helpful lins for more info:

BTW, you don't need any shots to visit South Africa!
