What is the difference between the shimano deore derailleurs and shifters and the SRAM?
I just bought a 2006 Raleigh Mojave 8.0 which has Shimano Deore F Derailleur, Shimano LX R Derailleur and the Deore 9spd shift lever. The 2007 has SRAM X-7 front and rear derailleurs and the SRAM SX-5 9spd shift levers.
Well - both have a two year warranty.
Sram is 1:1 cable pull & Shimano is 2:1 = Sram is a lighter shifting action and Shimano requires a more tedious adjustment.
Shimano has a hinged "B Knucke" - Sram is a fixed "B Knuckle"
What does all this mean to you..? Less effort, less gear hopping, and fewer adjustments.
I just put the SX5 Shifters and X.7 Rear Der on my wife's bike and have not had to touch it since I installed it. I run Sram X.0 on my Remedy66 and did so on my Fuel EX9 as well. My Commuter runs XTR - but that's because the bike will never see anything rough.

If you are just going to cruise around, Shimano is fine - it's the rough trail riding that, in my opinion, Shimano leaves a lot to be desired.
How do SRAM Attack Shifters compare to XT or LX?
I'm interested to know if anyone has experience using SRAM attack 9-speed shifters as well as Shimano XT or LX shifters and, if so, how do the SRAMs perform in comparison? I've mostly only used LX or XT shifters, but am considering purchasing SRAMs.
Sram's work great, If you are only interested in upgrading the shifters there are a few issues to be concerned with. Sram and Shimano use different pull ratios. Shimano uses a 2:1 pull, ratio Sram uses a 1:1 ratio. Therefor you must make sure that you use a Shimano shifter with a Shimano derailleur, and Sram With Sram. The best thing about Sram is how long they stay adjusted without any constant tweaking.
Edit: Yeah at the time I posted this I just couldn't remember if they were available in both trigger and twist shift.
Can I use Shimano chain replacment pins on a SRAM chain?
I have pins for a 9-speed shimano chain. Will they work on a 9-speed SRAM chain?
I don't know, but you could give it a try if you want. Not sure why you'd want to, though. At $1.50 to $2.00 each, it's an expensive experiment for something like a chain. Probably simpler to just carry a few extra links in your toolbag if you need them on the trail.
