Genteel xenophobia | 6000 miles from civilisation… (by: antithesis)
So called “Genteel Xenophobia” is just as bad. It’s incredible to think that an organization touting itself as the bringer of the good news, saver of the people and all-around swell folks would do something like this. ...

xenophobia?
what is xenophobia? and does it have anything to do with the civil war?

"fear or hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything foreign or strange" http://www.yourdictionary.com/xenophobia Racism is a form of xenophobia, and racism would be a necessary prerequisite to the form of slavery practiced in the antebellum American South. Slavery was one major source of the tension between the South and the rest of the Union. The primary reason for the secessions which began the Civil War was a disagreement over States' Rights: constitutionally, how autonomous are the individual states? The South feared that their autonomy would be weakened, slavery would be banned, and their economy and culture ruined due to laws passed by outsiders (more strangers) who didn't understand them or care to (xenophobia from the other side). So yes, it did have something to do with the Civil War and with its aftermath. Still does.

What is the difference between racism, xenophobia and homophobia?
Please consider the question carefully before you answer and don’t just look the three pertinent words up on some online dictionary (although that might be a starting point). The question is: What, in your opinion, is the difference between racism, xenophobia and homophobia? Is one more reprehensible than the others (or, indeed, one/any of them reprehesible at all)? Are they separate phenomena, or merely separate points on the same cotinuum? What is your view? I ask this because I’ve just watched two, profoundly moving (for me), documentaries back-to-back on TV. I aopologise that I’ve posted this question under more than once category, but I think this is applicable to more than one subject category. The first documentary was abbout a gay guy who was beaten and killed by a skinhead gang who had set out to “do an Arab”. They ultimately killed the gay guy because he admitted that he was gay – basically admiting and proclaiming to the death that he was ‘different to them’. The second documentary was about Bernard Manning. The message that I got from this was that he was not apologetic about the fact that he was racist. He treated people from different cultures (regardless of skin colour e.g native scottish, Irish and Frence - in contrast to being ‘English’) as ‘different’ However, he proclaimed the ‘benevolence’ of his humour throughout. In other words, the theme running throughout the documentary was that Bernard’s point was that it was ‘only a joke’. You might argue that all are equaly pernicious; or that one type of descimination (or actions based upon that discrimination) is worse than onother. If so, please explain your reasoning.

I have awalys viewed them this way: racism is a hatred of other colours of skin/cultures etc supposedly rising from an overinflated passion for a persons own country/colour etc, and refusal to accept other colours/races etc as equals. xenophobia is a fear of foreigners homophobia is a fear of people who engage in homosexual behaviour. Anything with the word "phobia" in it is a fear rather than a hatred. However a lot of homophobics express hatred so in that case its a fear which creates a hatred. I think xenophobia is different from the others as if its genuine xenophobia it should'nt create a hatred, just the fear element. Its a good question actually as it raises the issue about labelling people and that conditions supposed to be "phobias" are used to describe people who basically use it as a form of bullying and hatred.

Is Xenophobia extremely strong in japan?
I know there are some Japanese like this but a majority? I know some feel that non Japanese shouldn't live in japan and i understand that but what about tourist's? I've seen a video on youtube with xenophobia signs all throughout japan like no Filipinos! or White people! or no foreigners allowed! This is the only downside about Japan and im worried.

Xenophobia is everywhere, no matter what country it is. However, I'd like to tell you not to worry that much. You see, I guess that Japan's the LEAST racist nation in Asia. You will be neither treated badly nor welcomed as if you were long-time friend. In short, you are just visiting. But I think it is true that Japanese have strong sense of pride in their race. Here's my story--------- When I was in my college library, I came to meet a Japanese girl who me asked what my nationality was. When I told her "I'm Korean", she clapped and told me gladly that she knew it. Then the girl talked about some Korean actors who are famous in Japan and life in America. And during the latter conversation, I remember her mentioning the phrase "we Asians" at least ten times. Yep, she had a pride in her own race than I did. And about Americans, this is what she told me: "They don't know sh** about the world" Did I agree? Yes, to some extent. But I was quite shocked since she was so extreme despite her liberal attitude. I wouldn't have said like that.
